A new system to obtain finger print reports on criminals from any given police division was introduced today.The new system will facilitate automatic fingerprint processing with all police stations and divisions island-wide.
The automated fingerprints system is an innovations of the University of Colombo School of Computing and the Forensic Fingerprint Expert of Police.
At its inception, the system covered 42 police divisions and linked the Criminal Investigations Department, Fraud Investigation Bureau , Police Narcotics Bureau and the Terrorist Investigation Department.
Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon praised the new system saying it would help avoid detaining innocent individuals.
Sagala Ratnayake, the Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development, said Sri Lanka was far behind the rest of the world and it was time such a system was introduced in the country.
